Death of the Dishwasher

It is with sincere regret I have to announce the departure of a treasured part of our household. It seems our dishwasher ran it's last cycle over the weekend. I am not devastated, but highly disappointed. It may be some time before this dear friend is replaced.

I guess we have three boys here who will learn to do dishes the old fashioned way.

Muhuhahahahaha!

Can Spiders Break Your Toes?

Poor Mark. He was only trying to save me from a spider. And now he has broken toes.

We were in his parents' backyard. In the hot tub. We noticed a huge spiderweb housing an GINORMOUS spider. Out I jumped to get a better look. (Yes - I was being brave.) On my way back in the tub I noticed a smashed frog on the hot tub cover. Still fairly fresh. (ew) Out jumps Mark to grab the hose to spray off the nasty smashed frog before the sun fried it to the cover. Oops - through the spiderweb he goes. He begins flailing around and dives to the ground - all while I erupt with laughter. Mark realizes the spider is still in the half of the web NOT covering his face and recovers his composure, sprays the smooshed froggie off the cover, returns the hose and rejoins me in the hot tub.

Enter spider #2.

I look up and to my horror there is an even larger, more horrible, more evil spider dangling just overhead. How we missed this one to begin with I'll never know. We jumped out of the hot tub once again. Mark went after the hose - once again - to spray the vile sucker down. He did well to dodge that big 1/2 remaining spider web on his way to the hose, but after he picked up the hose, he somehow managed to bang his toes horrendously hard into a retaining wall (or something of the sort). As he turned in sheer agony - hopping and yelling - he met up with the spider web again. I didn't realize he'd hurt himself and was rolling with laughter over the fact that he'd gone through the web twice. (I don't think this made him happy.) Once again he regained composure, sprayed the spider away, put away the hose and we both got back into the tub.

After looking at how quickly his toes were swelling, we thought he may have broken at least one or two. We sat back, tried to relax and Mark elevated his poor throbbing foot. All at once Mark's eyes became large. I looked up and behind me and there IT was. That hideous THING was back for more, dangling not more than inches over our heads. I was up and out of that hot tub as though my life depended on it. (And it may well have.)

We were done. Both of us. We headed for home. (That was the night of the freak wind storm.)

A couple days later Mark was still in so much pain that I insisted he see a doctor. After x-rays it was confirmed that there were indeed fractured toes.

So yes, spiders CAN break your toes. My husband is living proof.

Diabetes Walk

Saturday was our yearly walk for diabetes. This is the first year we've walked for JDRF. (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) JDRF exclusively does research for Type 1 Diabetes (Orin's type). Previously, I've walked for ADA. (American Diabetes Association).

Another first for this year is that the boys participated. This seemed to be a real eye-opener for Orin. This was the first time he was around any great number of fellow Diabetics. There were many booths set up with various different blood sugar meters and insulin pumps and so on. Most children are excited about thoughts of new bicycles. Orin was ecstatic over thoughts of new pumps and new meters. I'm not sure how to feel about that. I'm glad he's excited, but at the same time, sad that he even has to know what they are.

The walk began at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It wasn't very long. Only 2.49 miles. Long for the kids I suppose. It strolled through a memorial park to the William McKinley memorial. This was the half way point. Orin's blood sugar was running low by the time we reached the memorial, so Mark, Logan and Matthew hiked the stairs while Orin and I took a breather so he could recover (and eat some sugar).

When we returned to the Football Hall of Fame, we were given "lunch". This "lunch" consisted of a "6 inch" (honestly I think it was a 4 inch) subway sandwich and a water. Then we were supposed to be treated to a free tour of the Hall of Fame. The boys really didn't care about the tour and just wanted FOOD, so we headed for McDonalds.

All in all it was a great experience for all of us!

Power Restored

The power was restored Saturday afternoon. Thank heavens!

I have to say living without electricity for nearly a week wasn't as bad as I would have thought. (The neighbor's generator helped with that tremendously, I suppose.)

10 Lessons Learned

These are the things I have learned so far from the big power outage. (Yes, we're still without power. Day #4 and counting.)

1. I can survive without a hairdryer.
2. Laundromats do not take quarters.
3. Laundromats are expensive.
4. I have wonderful family and neighbors. (I already knew that, but it's reinforced in times like these.)
5. My children don't seem to whine about no TV as much as some others. (I chalk this up to my "if the sun is out, so are you" rule.)
6. I take electricity for granted.
7. I really really LIKE electricity.
8. I would not be a happy Amish momma.
9. I can survive the morning without a cup of java.
10. It's ok for the house to be even messier when the power's out. I can't see it. :)

Ike's Wrath

Sunday, Ike stormed through our area. Yes, Hurricane Ike. In Ohio. Well, at least the remnants of it. I can't say that I've ever seen winds quite like that before. Gusts were reported in excess of 60 MPH. Trees were ripped up by the roots and power is out everywhere. Schools are closed due downed trees over roads and power outages everywhere. (Of course, Wooster City Schools aren't closed - the boys couldn't be so lucky.)

Our power has been out since Sunday evening about 7:00 PM. We are told it could be Sunday or possibly Monday before power is restored.

**SAY WHAT?!**

Apparently the power company has sent so many helpers to Texas that they're unable to deal with what has happened at home in a timely fashion. (Understandable)

Praise the Lord it's not the middle of winter so we don't have cold weather to contend with. We have hot running water. Our next door neighbors have generously allowed us to plug into their generator to run our fridge - so we haven't lost any food!! We can cook on the stove with gas power. Plenty of candles and flashlights light the way in the evening and at night. We're not so bad off.

I'm looking at this a sort of an adventure. It's certainly something out of the norm. The boys aren't complaining yet.

The thing I miss the most so far - my hairdryer.

Nerd Pants

Due to a growth spurt, I took Orin on a quick trip to Kohl's for some new pants on Friday. It turns out he is fussy about his jeans. Our conversations went something like this...

Mom - "How about these?"

Orin - "I don't like these. They make me look like a good boy."

Mom - "A good boy? Is that such a bad thing?"

Orin - "These (pointing to another pair) make me look like a bad boy - I like these. These other ones are nerd pants."

Mom - "NERD pants?!" hehehe "You mean those are cooler than these..."

Orin only likes certain colors, certain patterns on back pockets, and so on and so forth. He doesn't seem to pay attention to much else - why the jeans?

All Without Coffee

Logan woke early due to a nightmare (morningmare) and discovered he's not feeling well. Runny nose, scratchy throat and a warm forehead... uh oh. Orin and Matthew are both in the midst of an allergy flare-up. I'm going to assume the same of Logan.

Orin stuck a knife (or two) in the toaster while it was plugged in. His Toaster Strudel icing packet fell inside the toaster so he went after it with a knife. YOWZA! Thank goodness Orin's guardian angel is doing his/her job.

Matthew showed up this morning dressed in his "too big" shoes, "too big" jeans, a long sleeved shirt and a coat. Goodness me! The forecast says sunny and 80 today. Yes, it was chilly at 6:00 AM, but let's think ahead.

And the worst moment of the morning - remembering that
*** WE ARE OUT OF COFFEE! ***

Nock

This is the latest decor on the outside of Logan and Orin's bedroom door. I just LOVE the proud display of the American flag. Until last weekend, the flag was all that was there. My lovely niece Adriane suggested they post a sign advising people to "NOCK". Adriane was even so kind as to spell the word out for Orin as he carefully followed her instructions.

I can't help but smile each time I walk by.
