Teacher Gifts

This year's teacher gifts were simple. We mixed "equal" parts applesauce and ground cinnamon into a dough then rolled it out to about 1/4 or more inch thick. (The recipe called for equal parts, but I had to improvise.) I found a template of a primitive looking star on-line, printed it out, traced it onto cardboard then cut it out for our pattern. We cut out the stars then used a straw to poke a hole for the hangers. We left them to dry on cooling racks for several days. When they were ready, we tied raffia through the holes and voila - an inexpensive, but thoughtful way to say Merry Christmas. The ornaments smelled WONDERFUL and we had a great time making them.

Clothespins

Mark and I are in the kitchen preparing supper. In runs Logan yelling "LOOK!". As we turn, we see a nearly 10 year old boy standing there with his shirt pulled up to his chin and - wouldn't you know it - clothespins pinned to each nipple.

Logan says - "It hurts, but it makes them stick out."

As he disappeared around the corner, Mark and I began giggling and I believe we decided to forget we ever saw that. (Sorry, honey... I just made the memory permanent.)

Cool Class News

Every month Orin's teacher has the students submit a short story or article for their "Cool Class News" paper. She types them up and sends the newspaper home at the end of the month. Orin's article in this month's paper was the shortest so far this year, but more meaningful.

It's Christmas!
By Orin Selby

The main reason of Christmas is that Jesus was born. Every Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus. It's also about giving people presents. You get to see all your family members. I just love Christmas.

Short and sweet and to the point. He told me he thought about it and wanted to make sure people know Christmas is about Jesus since they're really not allowed to sing about Him in programs and what not at school. Christmas is about presents, too, but Jesus is much more important, so he put Him first. (How thoughtful.)

And to think... When I first opened the Cool Class News and saw how short O's article was I thought he just didn't feel like doing his homework.

I'm Frustrated

At Orin's therapy session last night, the therapist finally handed me his official report (to be submitted to our Pediatrician). His report states that the exaggerated blinking and hand flapping evidently isn't characteristic of his type of ADHD so it's been suggested we see a pediatric neurologist to diagnose any possible motor issues, etc. (Katie - you know what you're talking about!!!)

I can't get O scheduled with the Pediatrician until the end of January. He wants to do his own evaluation even though the therapist he referred us to already made a diagnosis. This frustrates me. Dr. Maxwell only does these evaluations on Thursdays at 11:15 because they're lengthy. (90+ minutes) Christmas and New Years are both on Thursdays and the following Thursday he's out for a meeting. I want it done NOW. He should reschedule something for us. Orin is much more important than anyone else. Right?!?!?! :)

I asked Dr. Gibson (therapist) to recommend some reading material. He handed me a book off the shelf in his office. He said "Instead of trying to help him, why don't you start by trying to understand what it's like inside him."

Of course I'm learning that many of the things I've been doing have been causing O even more frustration. A big one is when he does something completely obnoxious and I ask him why, he nearly always says "I don't know." In response I nearly always say "Yes, you do know and I want an answer." Turns out he really doesn't know. That's part of this disorder - being impulsive. Doing things without thinking.

I have a LOT to learn. I hope that I have people around me who will be supportive and offer constructive criticism when needed. I never want to do something for Orin that is not in his best interest. For example - medicating him because it offers ME an easier road to travel and not because it's what offers ORIN the best result.

ADHD

Orin’s been officially diagnosed with ADHD. His therapist hasn’t yet submitted his report to our pediatrician, so we’ve not discussed whether or not (*gulp) medication is a route we want to take at this point. I feel completely lost. There is SO MUCH information about ADHD… So many websites, So many books… It seems everyone has their own ideas about how to best manage things. Orin’s therapist has given me a bit of direction, but I want more. I want some sort of instruction manual.

The type of ADHD Orin has is “unusual” – or so I’m told. He is able to focus his attention just fine. The problem seems to be that his brain can’t figure out just what to focus on. Because of this, Orin is easily frustrated and/or overwhelmed. We’ll often find him playing in his room by himself even when there are other kids outside playing in our yard. We have a hard time getting ready for school in the mornings. He’ll enter his room intending to get dressed, but that book on his desk (or any other item or thought) distracts him and it’s as though he’s completely forgotten his original intent. Most days Orin will require endless reminders before he’s finally dressed. (In his defense – once in a while he shocks me and is dressed before I have a chance to check on him even once!)

He’s not behaving badly on purpose. I can clearly see this. I don’t know if others can see it, but I can. He is a sweet, funny, loving, affectionate, smart child. Orin is special in so many ways – as are all three of the boys. I know he’s upset and/or frustrated much of the time. He is different because of his diabetes and he has ADHD thrown on top. It’s difficult for me to figure out how and when to discipline him. When is he acting out because his blood sugar is low? Do I need to show more compassion because of the ADHD, do I treat him exactly the same as Logan and Matthew or does he need stricter guidance?
I. Simply. Don't. Know.

I know what I need to do at this point is a lot of praying. The Lord will guide me if I’m only able to put this issue in His hands. Sometimes I have a hard time handing over a big issue to an invisible person. I want to talk to someone with skin on.

Dining Out

Over the weekend Logan, Orin and Matthew built a fort out of blankets.

We went out to eat. Mark was eating something gassy - cabbage I think - and said sheepishly to the boys "I'm going to hang out with you in your fort tonight!".

Matthew immediately replied as seriously as a heart attack, and as loud as a fire truck...

"YOU BETTER NOT FART!"

Of course, I nearly choked on the food in my mouth - as did a man sitting at the table next to us as he began to belly laugh. We received many amused sideways glances and quite a few people chuckled.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time the five of us went out to eat together without causing someone to laugh. I don't think this is a bad thing. It's perhaps not the way I might plan it, but still - not a bad thing.
